ARTIST BIO
I am a self-taught artist, working with paper. My artwork is created by cutting, layering and structuring my chosen material to create colourful 3-D colour filled wall sculptures.
I draw inspiration from the natural world and its awe-inspiring forms and geometry. Paper offers the possibility of translating these forms into clean lines, something pleasing to the eye, as well as inspiring, sculptures that combine a mathematical quality with strong colours. I endeavour to make work that intrigues and seduces. The majority of my work is hand-cut with a surgical blade and scissors. I occasionally use a small die-cutting machine. I have resisted the temptation to rely more on machinery, as I really enjoy the meditative aspect of working by hand. The colour selection for the work is an intuitive process, through which the colours assert themselves and suggest compatibilities that make them resonate more strongly. The 3-D aspect of the work is hard to capture through a lens, or view on a screen. People are often surprised when they first see the actual work. A frequent comment is “wow! This so much more than what I was expecting”. I am a relative late-comer to the art world: growing up in Devon. I threw myself into the high-speed world of London media, working as a TV producer. After my time in London, I felt a need to return to country life and settled for a time in Herefordshire where I was able to explore my passion for interiors and house design by renovating and eventually building Eco homes. I am now in the rather fortunate position of being able to share my time between Ibiza and the UK. In Ibiza, I have found a colourful and vibrant nature-filled island that inspires me and influences my work at every step of the process. My recent years in the island have given me the freedom to explore the creativity that has been lurking beneath the surface. Take a look at my Portfolio for more examples of my paper artworks.
